The D.8002 HS was developed in Dubna (Moscow Region) by engineer V.F. Bobrakov in the early 1990s. It is one of the few domestically produced Atari peripherals that not only copied Western counterparts but surpassed them in many respects.
HS (High Speed): The name emphasized its key feature—support for high-speed data transfer. The drive was significantly faster than the standard Atari 1050 and even the XF551. Built using domestic and imported chips, the drive supported double-sided recording and 80 tracks. Presumably, the numbers 80 and 02 denoted this: 80 tracks on two sides.
The D.8002 HS drive was a response to the shortage and high cost of imported equipment. It was highly respected by users for its reliability and omnivorous floppy disk capabilities.
