Atari 810

First disk drive made by Atari. The 810 has a 40-track drive and only reads single density disks. It is the lowest common denominator among all compatible disk drives and will not read any larger disk formats, such as enhanced or double density.

The nominal data transfer rate on the SIO bus is 19.2 kbps, but the effective speed was typically limited to approximately 6 kbps. The drive is equipped with its own MOS 6507 microprocessor, making it a "smart" peripheral. Versions were produced with mechanisms from MPI (with a "lift" door) and Tandon (with a twist latch, known as the 810T).
