Access Unlimited ATAR88-A1

Access Unlimited ATAR88-A1 – is a third-party floppy disk drive released by Access Unlimited, Inc. It was one of the first clones designed to compete with the original Atari 810. The device was fully compatible with the Single Density (90 KB) format. Unlike the bulky Atari 810, the ATAR88-A1 often used more modern mechanisms of the time (such as those from Trak or MPI), making it slightly more compact and quieter in operation. Depending on the revision, there was either a rotary latch (a black handle that needs to be turned 90 degrees) or a lifting curtain (typical for MPI mechanisms).

Later, an advanced version, the ATAR44-1, was released, which supported Double Density (up to 180 KB).

Because this is an extremely rare third-party device, finding high-quality photos is difficult these days. It resembles early Trak or MicroSci models, like a standard industrial drive packaged in a separate steel case with the "Access Unlimited" logo on the sticker.
